The proud owners of "Scarlet Begonias" are well-seasoned boaters with many years on the water. They have owned many yachts and know what they like. Already slip customers with a charming 29 Dyer powerboat, traveling the waters powered only by the wind has always been their passion.
"Scarlet Begonias" is powered by a Volvo MD 22LB and has a ZF 120SE sail drive. She is 8 years old and scheduled to have the sealing ring changed out on the sail drive. The unit was disassembled and inspected.
Pre-buy survey noted considerable corrosion on the exterior of the sail drive - perhaps due to insufficient zinc protection. Once disassembled, there was more evidence of corrosion as well as a main seal leak on the drive. To repair or replace was the question.
Smart reasoning left us with one alternative, especially once it was learned that Volvo was not fully supporting that unit any more. A brand-new sail drive unit was ordered and installed.
One common problem with sail drive units is for the raw water inlet to become restricted. We elected to add a conventional thru-hull/seacock that is far less likely to foul up and can easily be cleaned out.
New ZF drive unit installed.
Normal Finn Gulf keel seam maintenance.
Old Optimus gas stove replaced by new Force 10 model. Icom VHF radio added to the electronics package.
