Beaver 29’ “Calabrone”

When restauranter and winemaker Joe Bastianich brought his 29’ Beaver Express Launch to NVB, manager Ron Helbig knew he had a much more extensive project on his hands than expected. Bastianich had recently purchased the neglected vessel and came to NVB with big visions. After thorough conversation between Helbig and Bastianich, a plan to fully restore the vessel was put into place. With Bastianich constantly traveling across the globe for his businesses, Helbig relied on weekly phone check-ins and progress photos to ensure Bastianich was satisfied with the direction of the project.

Over four months, Helbig and his team, along with local specialists, transformed the vessel into “Calabrone”: a high-performance 40-mph express launch with modern systems and classic aesthetics. Work included engine upgrades (to run on diesel or biodiesel), new electronics including a Furuno NavNet 3D GPS, improved fuel filtration, new wiring, refinished teak decking and brightwork, custom canvas, and decorative details like a gold-leafed transom with a hornet — the boat’s namesake and linked to Bastianich’s vineyard.

Bastianich plans to use Calabrone both as a commuter boat between his Greenwich, Conn. home and New York and as a family pleasure craft. Calabrone’s restoration was rooted in trust and communication between Bastianich and NVB, resulting in a “boat of dreams”.
